Reinforcement is the key for good memory. The lot of techniques told by memory books doesn't work well for us(medical personnel), mainly because of the shear volume of material that we have to memorise.

1. What i have found useful, is that try to think what is the practical significance of the material u are trying to memorise. This has worked well for me.
2. For the various cycles and things that have no interrelations, make a lot of small posters and stick it in ur room. Try to read them atleast once in 2 days. Believe me, after reading them for 6-8 times you would know them by heart. Since then u can just read them just once a week and later very occasionally.

3. Recently i have developed a quick way of notes taking. There's a application called 'sound recorder' in Windows computer. I just dictate my notes in this. It just saves so much of time of writing down the notes and it takes very little time to search them and hear them again. If u are using this application, when u r saving the file do ' save as' and while saving change the file format it 8 kbps as this will occupy very little space in ur hard disk.

4. During my inital days in medical school, i read a book, which was useful in increasing the speed of my reading. It really helped me a lot as my reading speed increased a lot.

5. Also what i learned from that book and proved useful was, take short power breaks. What it means that after reading for 20 -40 minutes take a short break. what u should do during this break, is
a. stretch ur limbs, rotate ur neck, eys - 2-3 minutes
b. alpha breathing - 4 seconds inhale deeply, next 4 seconds keep the air in ur lungs and just think that all the air is going to brain. Trust me u will feel a sudden rush of blood into ur head. Next 4 seconds, u have to expire all the air in ur lungs and simultaneously think that all the pain and bordeom in your brain is
leaving with the air. do 4-5 cycles
c. Finally just imagine what u want to achieve in you life. It has to be very detailed, for example, if you want to be a cardiologist and own a big villa , a fabulous car etc. etc. incorporate all these things in ur dream/imagination - 2-3 minutes

Then get back to ur reading.

I would be very interested in knowing ur feed back in this and if u come across something new about memory, let me know.

Do the following yogic exercise everyday and this will 100% get you have a very good long term memory.

Sit crossed legged and close your mouth and take a quick inhaling and exhaling 20 times and then the 21st time take a deep breath and hold it as long as possible and then release it slowly through the nose. Take a few minutes rest breathing normally and start the exercise once again . Do this three or four times in one sitting. for a good memory, u should write a note of everyting u learn
the other is study ur new lessons one day before class to get yourself ready and study the new lesson on the same day after u went to class. this will move ur learned things from ur short time memory to long time memory.
I tried it and it really works.
