Lamps that you carry usually use Nickel Cadnium. These rechargeable batteries have a long shelf life are not that expensive and hold a decent charge.

Non movable emergency lamps, attached to a wall for instance usually use Lead Acid, which is very heavy and toxic but cheap and holds a lot of charge for a long time.
