I've recently started playing the guitar - learning on acoustic, but I know given time that I will buy an electric as well.
But! I'm glad that I've started on the acoustic first - its harder and I reckon if you can play an acoustic, then playing an electric will be easier.
I like the sound produced by both, so even when I've got my electric, will still play the acoustic as well.
Lot depends on the music you like/want to play as well.

If you can afford an electric and a small amp, then I'd say start with electric. These days you can find a pair that's pretty cheap. When it comes to getting your first guitar, don't buy the most expensive one in the store, but don't buy the cheapest one either. Really cheap instruments are typically poorly constructed, and they'll be physically harder to play.
Also, definitely get some private lessons. You'd be amazed at what you can learn from just one lesson. I've seen people who acted too proud to take lessons, but suffered for it later on because they developed bad playing techniques that nobody was able to correct them on in the beginning.
After that, there isn't one particular thing you do to "learn guitar". You do several different things to get better: take lessons, learn your favorite songs by ear, study music theory, play in bands, etc.

Start with an acoustic guitar. I myself play alot of metal songs and started by learning the basics on an acoustic. It will be harder for you to learn on because you will need to push harder on the strings to get the sound out. However, once you start playing and can get a good sound out of an acoustic the electric guitar will be very easy for you to play. If done the other way around alot of people never quite pick up how to play the acoustic right because it is a bit harder.

LOL non electric... lol you need to do some research on ACOUSTIC guitars. Have you actually got a guitar yet? Get some books that will show you the basic chords and if you can afford it, take some lessons to show you how to play scales etc. This will help you get the basics down well enough.

id get yourself an electric guitar and start as you mean to go on. you can get a fairly cheap starter set for around 100 pound from quite a few places and im sure even some asda's now sell starter kits .I have been playing for around three years now but i only got serious scince i started lessons around a year ago , id definately recommend them. its very easy to get disheartend when first starting out and constantly struggling so having someone to help will bring your playing skills on greatly.its not easy learning to play but with a little patients the rewards can be great . hope this helps

Definitely start with an acoustic. If you develop good technique and tone on an acoustic, you will rock on an electric.
