1983: P VN Rao, along with Isidoro Malmierca Peoli, Cuban foreign minister, undertook a shuttle diplomacy in 1983 to mediate between Iran and Iraq on behalf of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM).
1985: Rajiv Gandhi moved Rao to the ministries of education and human resources development
1987: Rajiv Gandhi brought him back to the external affairs portfolio in 1987
1986-1989: serves as the minister of foreign affairs under Rajiv Gandhi's government
November 1989: Rajiv Gandhi lost the elections
December 1989 to June 1991: The governments of Prime Minister V P Singh and Chandrasekhar were in power
May 21, 1991: Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated and senior party leaders chose Narasimha Rao as the leader of the Congress Party's election campaign
June 1991: The Congress won the elections, and the party nominated Narasimha Rao for the prime minister's post
June 1996: completed his term as the Prime Minister
