You can order it on the rocks, but since you like rum and coke, I'd suggest trying whiskey and coke. I personally much prefer Canadian whiskey (Crown Royal, Canadian Club, etc.) over types like Johnny Walker or Jack Daniels. Other people are the opposite. So don't base everything off your first taste. My personal favorite drink is a Crown & Coke. You could also try a 7&7 (Seagram's with 7UP), or a Jack & Ginger (Jack Daniels and Ginger Ale). You can find a lot of interesting drink suggestions on CrownRoyal.com.
As for finding a brand, I'm of the opinion that you should figure out what your signature drink is, and get the highest quality version of that as you can. So while you don't have to go for the top-of-the-line stuff (like Crown Royal Special Reserve, or higher), I'd still avoid getting the cheapest brand in the store too.

I don't drink whiskey (tried it but never took to it), but my mother likes it from time to time. Her favorite drink is a Highball, I believe it's called. It's essentially Sweet Vermouth (1 part), Whiskey (1 part) and the rest is gingerale or some sort of carbonated beverage of your preference. She pours it in a short glass/tumbler with ice cubes. Then she tops it all off with some cherry juice and a couple of maraschino cherries. All this stirred some. She loves it. Good for sipping.
You can also have the whiskey on the rocks, just as is, without anything else. This is very common and well-preferred.
A decently cheap but tasty whiskey would be the SRS brand. That is what my mom gets.

For excellent sipping whiskeys (neat, on the rocks, or with a splash of water), I would highly recommend the following:
Woodford Reserve (Labrot & Graham, Distiller's Select), Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey
Tamnavulin (Speyside, Single Malt Rare Scotch Whisky, Aged 12 Years in Oak Casks)
Black Bush (Bushmills, Black Bush Irish Whiskey is a rich, dark blend from Ireland's oldest working distillery, Old Bushmills Distillery in County Antrim. It is comprised almost entirely of single malt whiskey. The malt whiskey used to create Black Bush is aged in carefully selected Spanish Oloroso sherry-seasoned oak casks before being blended with a small portion of delicate sweet single grain whiskey.
The secret of the whiskey's lively character lies in finding the perfect combination of the intense, spicy malt whiskey and the lighter, crisp single grain. As the whiskeys mellow together, the uniquely rounded bouquet, rich amber hue and distinctive spicy taste of Black Bush is born.
I have tasted quite a few different ones, and these are my favorites, however, it's all a matter of personal taste. One thing I have found in my tastings is that an extremely expensive liquor that has been aged for 50 years is not necessarily "better" than a more reasonably priced one that is aged 12 years. For my taste, they can be made to be so "smooth" that some of the lively flavors are lost. I assure you that all three of the above are very smooth, yet remain flavorful.

If you do not like it straight or on the rocks, Drink it with Diet Coke. Regular Coke adds too much sugar. As far as good whiskey, my favorite is Woodfords Reserve. It is moderatly priced at around $28. It is very smooth. If you live in Kentucky or pass through it, you can by Four Roses (A bourbon whiskey exported to Japan). It is cheaper and still very good and smooth.

The best whiskey is a good Scottish (scotch) or Irish whiskey. Johnny Walker, Chivas, Glenlivet etc. These are best drunk neat on the rocks or with a dash of soda water. The better the whiskey the smoother and more enjoyable you will find it. I find if you are going to ruin whiskey by mixing it with coke just go for an American one. They taste so bad that you have to dilute them with something anyway.

First I would recommend you try Irish whiskey.
Unlike Scotch whisky (spelt without an e),Irish is distilled three times instead of 2.That makes it a somewhat smoother drink and the taste is very different.
But even amongst Irish whiskeys there is a whole range of tastes and you have placed yourself in the most delightful of dilemmas here because you're going to have to try a few to determine which you like.
Drinking whisk(e)y is an acquired taste so you may want to mix .
Apart from Coke/Pepsi you can try 'Scotch/Irish and dry'-Whisky and a measure of dry ginger or you can have your scotch with 'a dash of pep'-a measure of peppermint cordial (white not green) and a dash of water.
My favorite would be Jamesons but as said-you need to try them all!!

Depends on what sort of whiskey your drinking. I always drink mine on the rocks. To drink whiskey at home, there are no short cuts, cheap whiskey is not as smooth as the more expensive brands, it all comes down to, you get what you pay for.

The decision is really up to you with me I like it straight. Some choose to have it on the rocks. The least expensive brand I like is good ol JD number 7. But that is up to you.
