hi
i get cashew nuts from my local market, and i was wondering if you could eat them raw. When i mean by raw, i don't mean 'raw' as in still in the red shell, but i mean should we heat it or dry roast it ..etc.?

Hi,

while not deadly, cashews ARE poisonous until 'cooked'. ALWAYS roast them, or buy them ready roasted.

I had two cashew trees when I lived in Belize. The fruits (yes, they have a fruit as wll as the nut) are eaten raw without any problem, but I was warned as soon as I got there by the locals that I should NEVER eat the nut raw.

As I don't like nuts (no allergy, I just don't like them!) I was never in a situation to test their knowledge but, overall, the advice given to me during my three years there was always sound, from nasty beasties to avoid, to cooking methods for sea creatures...I would recommend, therefore, adherance to this warning...

i.e. DON't eat them raw.

Good luck,

Raw Cashews (and Almonds especially) are very good for you.

Raw Almonds are an excellent snack, especially if you are trying to lose weight and/or diabetic.

To round off the snack, you can always have a half-cup of soymilk, to get the legume and nut protein in the same snack.

HOWEVER, portion control is REALLY important.

Here is a foolproof method for anyone to know what a portion of nuts is for them:

Put nuts in your hand and close your fingers and thumb into a fist.

Any nuts that can be seen must be left behind. IF you think you took too few, then ad a few and try again. But don't cheat yourself: if you see them, they aren't a part of that portion.

I ate them raw (removed from the shell and sun-dried), and liked the flavor so much, I must have eaten a cupful before my dad noticed what I was doing and told me that raw cashew works like a purgative. I stopped short but I still got the worst stomach ache in my lifetime that night, kept me up nearly all night because of frequent trips to the bathroom.

Don't eat it raw, or if you must, not too much!

NO! What you seem to think are raw nuts are cooked already! Raw cashew nuts can lead to horrid allergic reaction. Do not eat them raw! Ans do not cook raw nuts indoors.
