I currently have 2 cheap dvd players - a Yamada GDVD301RP player (£39 from Amazon) and a Goodmans DVD 5501 writer (£65 from Tesco). I want to pipe the sound through a high-end amplifier (Arcam). Unfortunately, the Yamada sound quality is muffled, flat, and lacking any kind of real quality or depth. The Goodmans on the other hand gives a reasonable sound with good tonal qualities - unfortunately, it does not have any form of volume control which I need.
Can anyone reccomend a cheap DVD player (with volume control) that gives a very good quality sound (from Mp3 disks)?

There's really maybe only one or two (especially if cheap) at best DVD players out there with a volume control unless you get one with a volume control on the headphone output and connect the amp to that output (via Y-stereo adapter). Sound quality will suffer somewhat however.

My recommendation to you is to either use the (if your TV has a variable audio output) TV for volume control, or better yet, get a A/V preamplifier. Unless you can find one on auction, you're going to have to spend more to achieve the results you want. I mean, you have an Arcam amplifier, so why not at least invest in a moderately priced DVD player. I recommend one of the (virtually) universal OPPO models.

I recommend the Creek Audio OBH-12 volume control for an inexpensive pre-amp. This pre-amp is a passive volume control which was very highly rated in Stereophile Magazine. It comes with a remote control. You can operate it without power, but you only can use one input device. If you want to fully use the pre-amp, you have to plug it in. You can by a used one on e-bay for around $200.00.

I like the Pioneer Elite line of DVD players. Mass production units are cheap, but don't sound as good.

Get any cheap DVD player that with a digital audio output. (Your current players may already do this; I couldn't find much information on them.) Then get a good audio receiver and let that do your digital to analog processing and volume control. You can probably find an inexpensive receiver on eBay.

Get any player with "192 kHZ" DACs in it..."DAC" is "digital-to-analog-converter"...Most Most DVD players run at only "96 kHZ".

Even though, CDs and DVDs are only recorded at around "48 kHZ", the "192 kHZ" DACs will make them sound GREAT!
