I do not have the money to buy the originals, so I will forever remain computer illiterate if I have to buy. Should I not use the illegal copies then?

Of course you should avoid using illegal copies of computer programs. There are, however, free alternatives. If you can find a site that still hosts a download of StarOffice 5.2 (a program that will read/write any word processor or database files that were current when it was released, and that can even serve as an internet browser), that's the last 100% free version of that program that was offered. The latest version of StarOffice now requires that you purchase it, but the same basic software was made available through the OpenOffice program as the result of an agreement with Sun Microsystems (the company that releases StarOffice). Other sources offer free programs for many functions, including music playback, internet browsing, spyware removal, and nearly everything that you can think of.

The one program that you really shouldn't rely on freeware for is antivirus protection. You can find free antivirus programs, but they don't get updated nearly enough to be effective against the wide variety of viruses that get released every single day.
