When you are something like a hermaphrodite like that Komodo dragon thing that was in the paper recently! It had babies on its own without a mate - therefore making it both mother AND father.
A human father can never be a mother, however much he takes the role he can technically only be a father. Someone like Bob Geldof has been awarded things like 'Best Celebrity Mother' but it doesnt make him a mother - he is still the girls' father and can never be anything else.
A good father can take the place of a mother if the mother isnt around.
