People vary on when they enter REM. It's approximately 4-6 hours after you've gone to sleep for the strongest part of the REM. This time puts you when dreams are their most vivid as well. As I've learned from reading others' posts as well, as my own experience, this is the easiest time to lucid dream.

There's so much you could be referring to when you said "and the like". Without more info, you may have already looked into techniques such as Wake Back to Bed (WBTB),Wake Induced Lucid Dream (WILD), and/or Mnemonic Induction of Lucid Dream (MILD) among others. If not, the MILD method and the WBTB are the most common. WILD is my favorite way to ld.

The words techniques and methods might discourage some people; don't let it. People had just tried different things and gave it a name. Some are weird and I wouldn't try myself such as punishing yourself (PILD), but that doesn't mean it won't work for some. The three I mentioned in the section above have all worked for me.

Best of luck to you. It's not uncommon for those who are looking into lucid dreaming to have one soon after. Email me if I can help you with anything else. Sorry for the long answer. I'll list some websites below.

The average person, assuming you do not have any sleep disorders go into REM around 60 minutes after sleep onset. There are approximately 4 periods of REM with your last hour of sleep being one of them.

REM can only be calculated by having a polysomnogram. But they will not help in your experiments.

Now that's is answered. I am sure you wanted to know for a holistic reason and not medical one. If you want the latter go to www.sleepmed.md otherwise You can go to the lucid dream society at http://www.lucidity.com/LucidDreamingFAQ2.html

REM sleep can be calculated through EEG telemetry in a sleep research laboratory,so you need a help for this.
