I own own 2 blood parrot fish, one 7 inches and one 6 inches. a few weeks ago i noticed some small dark spots appearing by the smaller one's head. the fish has since had the dark spot spread up his back.. also his fins are beginning to show the same progressive dark spots, moving outward towards the tip of the fin. The larger one shows no signs of change. Any thoughts?

Possibly, black spot disease, which is known to affect only blood parrots. Most people don't even realize that it's a problem and think it just normal coloration. There doesn't seem to be many hard facts on the disease other than it is probably caused by a parasite and is often related to poor water quality (increased ammonia, nitrites or nitrates), if that's the case increase the rate of water changes and when the water is better you should see improvements. If the water is not the cause sometimes the disease will disappear within a few days and if it becomes a problem you can try treating it with malachite green or another product that's effective against parasites. Apparently some people have noticed that the black spots also appear when some blood parrots are about to breed.

Black spots on blood parrot fishes form as the nitrate levels (if I remember correctly, it's a level of something) in the water increase. Keep the water cleaner and you should see the spots becoming small and finally disappearing altogether.
