In a nutshell, green card is the residence permit to stay legally in the United States of America. If eligible, foreigners can apply for it under different categories and do all the paperwork, which takes a long time.

It is a form of ID that allows you to legally reside in the United States, its called "green card" because back in the day it was actually green.
