They always seem to be going somewhere, and need to get there quickly, WHY????

More than any other animal, the dog has the ability to keep up a punishing speed of travel over long distances. African wild dogs run down their quarry to the point of exhaustion and the husky is of course well known for sprinting hours at a time.
Stray dogs cover large areas and travel in order to look for scraps and other feeding opportunities. They smell better than they see so they're probably homing in on a scent a long distance away and keep up a jogging pace the entire time.

I think they are under a great deal of stress from being alone and hungry. Fear of being alone drives them to keep traveling looking for home and safety. Dogs are pack animals and it is hard for them to travel alone without the companionship and protection of other dogs or people.

The simplest answer, that I can GIVE you, is FEAR! The dog realises, that, - having been ABUSED, ONCE, by a HUMAN, - NONE of them, can be TRUSTED! I tell you, my friend, - although the UK, has, - for YEARS, - PRIDED itself, on being a "NATION OF ANIMAL LOVERS", - the FACT, remains, that there are, - STILL, - some SICK people, (although, I would LIKE to use a more "PROFANE" description), out there! ALL animals deserve to be LOVED, - they GIVE so MUCH, in terms of LOVE, - and, yet, they are STILL treated SO BADLY!

sometimes they are frantically looking for their owner...other times they are frantically running from their owner if you see a stray don't be afraid ... call it to you most dogs understand you are trying to help and they will usually walk quickly towards you if you don't scare them....
