Not like a waitress in a coffee shop calling you "honey" but just like an attractive lady of the same age throwing in a "baby" in the conversation. It usually always comes at the end of a convo. Like "thanks baby" or "alright baby ttyl". Kinda seems like they're trying to sneak it in there right before they dash away. I've never used the word outside of a serious relationship so it seems odd to me. Are these women hitting on me or is there just a bunch of attractive girls my age that like to call everyone baby?

it is easier to use than proper name of individual or friends

That depends a lot from what region and group of which country they're from.

Most likely it doesn't mean much.
