Simple.

You make animated conversation with the person on your left while toying with the food, until the waiter removes it between courses.

Be not the first to start eating! Just speak to your neighbours and fumble with your food. (as Victory said). Now comes the best part:

Wait until somebody else tries to eat and messes it all, making a bad impression. Then you say that this is not a problem, you yourself have the same difficulty. You start eating and messing. Everybody will be relieved that the first person messing himself is not too uncomfortable with himself and thanks you for rescuing the dinner.

It is something the Dutch queen is said to have done at a dinner. The etiquette give general rules but the are made for people to be comfortable with the situation, not annoying anybody. So if someone makes a mistake and you rescue him, everybody will think you did well.

You are right-they may very well serve something messy/difficult to eat-that is the hostesses decision. If not spaghetti I can see some other type of pasta being served.
Does anyone remember the escargot scene in Pretty Woman? I cannot eat escargot or crab legs without getting some on me.
The best you can do is eat carefully and laugh it off if you get it on you-though I also liked Stillwater's answer.
I usually just say"if you see it on my clothes you know I really enjoyed it".

Well first of all spaghetti would not be served. Anyway, do some positive self talk, stop being nervous. And just simply eat and use your table manners. This is where everything your mother taught you comes in handy. Eat with your mouth closed, do not talk with your mouth full, keep your elbows off the table, etc. And enjoy your meal. If you get food on your chin, wipe your face with your napkin. Most people are going to be so busy eating they are not going to be concentrating on how you are eating, unless your table manners are that of an animal. So just relax, be yourself and enjoy the meal. Good luck and God bless****

I guess I would just eat slowly and carefully, keeping my napkin very handy.Of course if your like me the more careful you are the more you'll make a mess...lol.
If you do happen to make a mistake, apologize and excuse yourself to the restroom to clean up.Make a joke about how you knew this would happen or something like that.♥

There's a reason why there's like 5 forks, 5 spoons, and napkins all over the place for just one person so you don't end up getting it all over yourself.

make a joke about how you'll be wearing it soon, and most people will agree about them selves also. my first date with my now husband was a bit like that! he had a white shirt on and order spaghetti with a tomato sauce. he commented on what a silly choice he made and of course splashed alot on him self. i found it indearing!

I'd go ahead and eat it anyway, just get your hands on a large quantity of napkins. I think it would be more rude not to eat at all than to get it all over yourself.

I'd tuck the big napkin that you get at a fancy dinner and tuck it into my top.mess would be on napkin and not you.

I would eat more neatly so that I wouldn't get the food all over myself.
