As long as your scalp isn't sore or your hair isn't fried, you should be fine. Although, if you are just wanting to touch up your roots, it's best to try and keep the color mostly toward the roots of your hair. Then you should put the remaining color on the rest of your hair for the last 5 minutes or so of the timed period. The ends are more porous and they will absorb the color much faster, so there's no need to keep color on the ends for too long. You could end up really damaging your hair and having it turn out darker at the bottom.

I learned all this the hard way. I used to get bored and do crazy stuff to my hair when I was young. I have thin, fragile hair and mine did thin out some after coloring it twice in one week. No one else could tell, but I could see it when it started growing back in. I even colored it 3 times in a 2 week period. I kept trying to correct the color. Now I know that it is best to use a daily rinse out toner on your hair if it doesn't come out the way you had hoped. There is a brand called "Roux" and they sell it at beauty supply stores and even at Wal-Mart for around $4. Good luck!

Do a strand test.
Fill your bathroom sink with water, pluck out one hair, drop hair in water : if it sinks that means your hair is too porous, but if it floats that means it's strong.
repeat the test using single hairs from different areas all over your head.

It won't fall out ..your hair might get abit dry. But you can fix that with hair treatment or with leave in conditioner.
