A Barrel cactus is a type of cactus characterized by being approximately barrel-shaped. Barrel cacti are classified into the two genera Echinocactus and Ferocactus.

Their pineapple-shaped fruit can be easily removed and tastes a bit like lemon. These fruits are eaten by animals and birds.

The seeds remain intact and pass out of the digestive tract through the faecal matter and are spread far and wide.
Under suitable condition they germinate.

The cactus may reach over a meter in height. Its ribs are numerous and pronounced and the spines are long and yellow. Small yellow flowers appear around the crown of the plant only after many years. It is considered easy to grow and relatively fast growing. They may also produce round offshoots from the main stem, called pups.

There are many species of barrel cactus but most produce a juicy fleshy fruit. The fruit is a favorite food of deer and small rodents which spread the seed as it passes through their bodies undigested. Birds also spread the seed in a similar manner.
