it doesnt... oxygen is passed trough the umbilical cord..

what I always wondered is how they poop! lol.

Fetuses don't breathe. They are surrounded by fluid and get oxygen and other nutrients from the mother, through blood, via the umbilical cord.

One of the definitions of "breathe" is "to take in oxygen and give out carbon dioxide through natural processes." The baby breathes through the umbilical cord.

It is called fetal respiration and does not involve the lungs (its done through the circulatory system) - it involves the transfer of waste products back to the mother through the umbilical cord.
