Journeyman is a term given out by the Unions. A journeyman is a person who has completed a required amount of training and has put in the required amount of time on the job to become a Journeyman. I am a Journeyman Ironworker. I had to be in the union for 3 years complete many different tests on many different things and pass 2 different welding certification programs before I was given m,y Journeymans Certificate. A journeyman welder must have 3 years experience and be certrified in 2 different processes of welding ie: Mig (GMAW or Gas Metal Arc Welding) and Stick ( Shielded Metal Arc Welding or SMAW). Apprenticeships are the only way to get to journeymen status in the Union. There are several levels of apprentiship.
