They work you just to have to find a reputable one, one that is accredited. Try National Foundation for Credit Counseling.
If your in debt with a credit card company, ask them directly,
they usually have referrals, they want to get paid in full so they would rather you work with some one. Dont go with the "We'll slash your credit in half" agencies, those are a scam.

The ones that make you pay in monthly, steer clear of those--they will get you sued. Settlement companies that negotiate 1-time payoffs in the neighborhood of 50% are totally legit. They are "one and done." They don't string you along and basically only get paid if they achieve results.

You do have to be careful but they are not all bad. Comapnies like savings . com are very trustworthy and do a good job.
