I live in Sylmar, you don't want to stay at the Motel 6...it was a big scandal about child predators staying there once they got out of jail, There is a Holiday Inn on Roscoe & Sepulveda ( Van Nuys) that runs about $80 per nite, location isn't all that great but it is a nice property, also the Raddisson on Sepulveda & Ventura in Sherman Oaks, right off the 405 freeway, you can't miss it, nice location also, there are plenty of hotels out here in the Valley, it shouldn't be that hard to find one, I am a travel agent so if you need more help email me.

If you're heading to Six Flags Magic Mountain, the Good Nite Inn in Sylmar is always the cheapest one in that general area.

How picky are you? Will a Motel 6 do? Try looking around for a San Fernando Valley location at Motel6.com & you might come up with something. All the Motel 6's are basic but adequate, and they've undergone refurbishment & got a new decor in the past year. I just stayed at the Motel 6 in Thousand Oaks in Jan 2007 and it was nice.

Since LA is so spread out, there is no single place that is close to EVERYTHING. Most people who come here tend to stay in Hollywood, Santa Monica, or Anaheim. In Hollywood, I recommend the Orchid Suites, Hollywood Celebrity Hotel, or Holiday Inn Walk of Fame, all near Hollywood and Highland. From there, you can take the Red Line Subway to Universal or downtown. Getting there from the airport is easy. Look for the Union Station flyaway bus upon arrival, then take the Red Line Subway to Hollywood & Highland.

Vicki nailed it.

A motel chain, such as Motel 6 or Good Nite Inn will probably be the cheapest thing you will find.

There are plenty of motels around, but you may get something seedy or a "no-tell motel." Stick with the chains.

See if any of them offer discounts, AAA, corporate etc.
