Communal eating/dining is not too healthy and should be avoided. It's best to use a plate with fork and knife/spoon..

Table manners...well what my parents taught me when I was little
1) Don't play with your chopsticks like a drumstick
2) Don't put the chopstick down your throat.
3) Always have the eldest person take food first
4) Don't leave any rice in your bowl
5) Don't leave the table during dinner.
6) Unless you plan to take something, don't stick your chopsticks in the food...or try to "search" the plate of food with your chopsticks.
7) Pour drinks (like tea if at a restaurant) for other first before yourself.

and some others I don't remember. Usually it's just common sense and curtesy.

Well,I'm not of Chinese descent but would wholeheartedly endorse the continuance of any custom that brought family and friends around the dinner table.
I despise the trend towards individual T.V. dinners and the absence of the family meal and we try to keep as many meals as possible as family opportunities to get together.
In answer to your last question,I appreciate any food so long as it is well cooked and from fresh ingredients and again support the saving of traditional dishes and am always grateful to whoever the cook has been to put such an effort into the prep and presentation of such.
If not,we may as well all give into MacDonald's and globalized crap
As for communal eating that's fine if I'm amongst friends or family-so long as I get my fair share of what's going!
