I've worked in the paint business for several years, and my experience with 'professional' interior decorators is that they tend to tell someone what would look best, by their own standards(not usually a good thing, you want you're house to be you're own creation). I don't mean to generalize them all, but this seems to be a trend with the ones I have encountered.

My advice is that if you have absolutely no idea what you want your room(s) to look like, then first try looking through several home decorating magazines and try to find 2-3 pictures of what you want. From there, go to any local store, Home D, Lowes, or any local store, and ask the employees to help.

Only after that if you are still lost, would I hire a decorator.

It wouldn't hurt if you think you need a lot of help. Most people, though, have some idea of what they would like to do and use magazines, Home Depot, Lowe's, Menard's, and other home building stores for their expert advice.
