Two years or more, regardless of the expiration -- as long as the integrity of the can is intact (not dented, bulging, broken, or frozen).

Store canned foods and other shelf stable products in a cool, dry place. Never put them above the stove, under the sink, in a damp garage or basement, or any place exposed to high or low temperature extremes. Store high acid foods such as tomatoes and other fruit up to 18 months; low acid foods such as meat and vegetables, 2 to 5 years. Canned meat and poultry will keep at best quality 2 to 5 years if the can remains in good condition and has been stored in a cool, clean, dry place. While extremely rare, a toxin produced by Clostridium botulinum is the worst danger in canned goods. NEVER USE food from containers that show possible "botulism" warnings: leaking, bulging, or badly dented cans; cracked jars or jars with loose or bulging lids; canned food with a foul odor; or any container that spurts liquid when opening. DON'T TASTE SUCH FOOD! Even a minuscule amount of botulinum toxin can be deadly. Can linings might discolor or corrode when metal reacts with high-acid foods such as tomatoes or pineapple. As long as the can is in good shape, the contents should be safe to eat, although the taste, texture and nutritional value of the food can diminish over time.

Most canned goods are good for a very long time. I recall reading some years ago that Del Monte (who makes lots of canned veggies) had opened some 20-year-old cans, and except for a slight softening of the veggies in question, they were still perfectly ok. I've only had one experience where a can of ANYTHING was bad (packed pumpkin last Thanksgiving, unfortunately), and it turns out the can was damaged, so it's not too surprising.

Usually canned and or bottled foods have a date stamped on the container. It is always best to use by or before this date!
The rule to live by on any canned or bottled food is:if the can is rusty or bulging - Do not use it or even open it! If it is past the expiration date and there are no signs of rust or bulging you may open the can, but if there is an off smell or has any hint of black fuzzy looking growth in the container,
throw it away. That would be botulism growing in the food!

Canned foods tend to have a fairly long shelf life and are usually used long before they have a chance to spoil. However, canned foods provide a good environment for the microorganism that causes botulism to grow. There are some steps that you can take to help ensure that your canned foods are safe:

1) Always check the experation dates on your cans.

2) Discard swollen cans, as these are sure fire signs of botulism

3) ALso discard cans with leaks or flawed seals, rust, dents, or missing labels.

If they haven't been punctured or opened or allowed bacteria in, they should be fine. I saw on the history channel that they found a can of beef from and expedition in like 1830 and gave it to a cat 110 years later and the cat didn't show any adverse signs. Thats the purpose of canned food, longevity.

well if you ask me then canned food is not good as fresh food is.
but still if you have to use then try to buy recently packed food.though mostly canned food have longer expirey of 6 months to one and half year.but try to buy the fresh one.because you never know if the can is properly sealed or not.when there are incidences of founding small snake in cola bottle of big companies like pepsi and all ,then improper sealing of can isnt big issue.
so just try to be careful and buy recently packed one

Hi !!!

It is always good to check the expiration date, on all the products, you'll be consuming.

And try not to eat them if the expiration date, is past the time.
when or if you do, you are take the risk of getting food poisoning,
because the coating of the inside of the cans, eventually will interact with the chemicals and preservatives, and when you eat it you will be eating particles of that coating!!!

TAKE CARE, GOD BLESS YOU & HAPPY LIFE

Canned goods have been known to last for many years, as long as the can does not appear to be enlarged or dented.
