As an Independent Insurance Agent I remember when a number of Carriers started running credit scores and those with the best scores got the best rate.
This aggravated me to no end and still does to a point! I know I have a customer who is an excellent driver, who I know will pay there bill on time yet I cant get them the best rate out there because of issues with credit. This really pissed me off!
Anyway to give you some explanation as to why the so called "preferred companies" run credit scores and offer lower rates to those with good credit standing is this. The carrier assumes that someone with good credit will pay there bill on time and consistently. They therefore can put that yet unearned premium on there books as potential assets. It's nothing personal, it's just business.
Again as an agent I don't like but I will use it as a tool if it will help my get my customer the best price with the best company. Trust me I understand your frustration.
