I get all tense around this guy we have never actually seen each other except for oictures and we talk by iming and on the phone but thats it. He is one of my good friend's ex.

Just tell very casually that he has some qualities that you think you could like in a guy, that way you are sort of hinting but not coming out and saying that you actually like him .

Ya know what? Don't tell him right away...just be a great friend..and be honestly caring and interested in whatever he likes to talk about with you...a lot of guys have told me that they can handle that...it is when a girl right away comes out and says"I like you alot..." that makes them feel kind of nervous...and or slightly scared or shyer...just be as good a friend as he's been to you..and sometimes just do a "random act of kindness" to show him that you Do appreciate him...!

give him those hints that u like him. make him guess. flirt with him and stuff, talk with him a lot more!!! act like u caer about what he thinks/does.
