A sign of feeling sexually attracted to someone else is that your pupils dilate. Using candles not only softens everything and creates an air of relaxation, but it also dilates your pupils, due to the lack of light. This makes the other person subconciously feel that you are attracted to them.
At the time you may not realise this, but it leaves you feeling good, so that next time you remember how you felt at that dinner. This adds to the reputation of being romantic.
It is very intimate. Low light means you have to lean in to see each other properly as you are talking :)
Also, if someone goes to the effort of preparing a dinner like that for you, or takes you out to a dinner like that, then you appreciate the effort and thought that has gone in to it.
It heightens all your senses, you are using taste, sight, smell and touch from being so close to each other and sound, maybe having to lean in to hear if you are whispering in a quiet environment. All this on top of the signals that someone fancies the pants off you, you can't really go wrong!

I've always thought the low light of the candles was reminiscent of the low light in the bedroom. Many people may have sex in full light, but Hollywood has portrayed it as in a dark room with just enough light to see one another by for a long time and it's now accepted as the norm.
Just my thought on it.

Just like guys are turned on by visual things.. girls are turned on by emotional things.. candle light dinners... the lights are turned down, you're probably alone, i dont know, it just sets the mood. for most girls its a turn on... i dont know why, but id reccommend it :]

because as it is dark nobody can figure out u, nor can u.
so it just turn u on and love to do all those mushhy mushhy emotions for ur loved ones.
so it becomes romantic.

I guess it's a gentler light, so it's fuzzy and soft focus. It makes people look better.
