In recent times the population of Americans who participate in civic organizations, whether fraternal grps, garden clubs, political parties, environmental organizations, youth minded clubs, even bridge clubs and bowling leagues, has been dwindling.
What's your excuse? What would entice you back?
What would be enough to get you to participate in civil society?
What made you leave? Why did you never find an interest in the first place?
What kind of nation will we have when we all sit here in front of a computer at home, alone?

I'm not much for groups and I'll tell you why. Because rarely is it that a member of a group, in a social setting, will open up and have a meaningful conversation at a mature depth. Most people who join groups are somewhat oversimplified intellectually speaking or are afraid of speaking what's on their mind when in the group. I've found that it's much more effective to work with someone one on one than it is to expect a group to take meaningfut action together. Of course I'm ex special forces and we work in small groups where each individual has first proven their commitment. If there were a civic organization that first made prospective members show the degree of their commitment then it might be a group worth joining. But for most, the bar is so incredibly low that they will let anyone join. Who would be so desperate as to seek out membership in such a group with such pathethic membership standards?

You answered your own question. In times past, if people wanted to communicate with others, or even be entertained, they had to leave their homes and interact with the world. With the internet, cable television, cell phones, etc, we now can do everything we used to do out in the world from the percieved comfort and safety of our homes.

I do participate in civil society, because I think it's important. It is very sad to me that our society has disintegrated into such isolationism and apathy. We are becoming a nation of hermits.

Sounds like something a political group dominated by academics would produce. Geologists as a group are highly skeptical of AGW. If your asking if proponents of AGW usually have left wing political ideas, well that's like asking if the Pope is a Catholic.

My excuse? I work
What would entice you back? If I didn't have to work
Why did I never find an interest? Who has the time, its work and family and then my schedule is full
