A guy from my school IMed me the other night, and said "will you go out with me". I knew he was joking about it, because even though we have a few classes together, we dont talk much, so he doesnt even know me well enough to ask me out. Plus, he told me after that he was joking. But do you think this could mean he actually does like me, and just wanted to see what my answer would be, then tell me he was joking? Because I mean it was so random, i dont think he was dared to do it or anything since nobody was over his house at the time, and why would he ask ME, of all the other girls in our grade ?? It just doesnt make sense to me, does anybody have any ideas?

Just leave it as a joke. He was playing. It's like elementary school:

Boy 1: (approches "Girl 1) Hey! Boy 2 likes you!
Boy 2: No, I don't! No I don't!
Girl 1: (looks at both boys and goes back to what she was doing)
(The boys run off)

It's just like that. It's a little joke. It means nothing.

He might be a little shy and also he is covering all the bases, if you said yes, he is in like flint and if you said no, it was just a joke, no harm done. I personally think he wants to go out with you..

Rock Star Outlaw said it 100% right. Put it out of your mind - the offer is off the table anyway.

This is really simple. He used a "fall-back tactic"
It means that he can put it out there with two possible outcome. If you said:
1. yea - i'll go out with you, he wins and gets to go out with you but
2. no - if you said no, he can "protect" himself and call it as a joke

So.. truth is.. he wants to ask you out, but he used a chicken fall back excuse to say he was just kidding.
