I am going to have my tonsills removed March 1st and want to know if anyone has advice for me. Is it horribly painful, something that medication won't help? Will I be out of work for a long time? What can I eat? I am choosing to take them out because they keep on developing tonsill stones.

I had mine out when I was 16 years old, it was painful right after having them out. I had a hard time eating at first, and talking was difficult. At first I couldn't speak above a whisper which was OK except when some one would call my house. They couldn't hear me on the phone because all I could do was whisper, I had to tap on the phone just so that they knew that some one was there, it was kind of funny. They got kind of mad since they thought I was fooling around, finally I had to have some one tell the person what was up and then they felt stupid.

In the first 24 after the operation you may have bleeding from the throat. You will have pain in your throat and you may have pain in your ears but both are normal. It is suggested that you take an analgesic (painkiller) for your pain. Fluids and soft, easily digestible foods such as ice cream, jello are usually given for a day or two until your can eat normally. Also in the first 24 hours they recommend that you lay on your side to avoid choking, from the bleeding.

Your sore throat, particularly at meal times, may persist for up to two week after the operation. Full recovery usually takes place within three weeks. Some people have bleeding later and if that happens you need to be examined by your doctor.

Every thing is going to be just fine and you will be back to better than normal before you know it. And best of all your throat won't give you any more problems and that will be a relief to you in the long run. Good Luck to you, Take care.

I've never heard of Tonsil Stones, but I have heard of Tonsillitis. I've never had mine removed, but now it's a very simple outpatient operation and there is not much pain. You shouldn't be out of work for more than a few days.

I had them out too for the same reason. Although the recovery wasn't all fun and games, it was so worth it in the end. It was painful but you can get through it, and you will have pain killers to help. A cool bonus is that after I got them removed I hardly ever get sick anymore. I've heard that often happens. You'll be ok, you'll be happy you got them removed.
