OK a 16v is a DOHC and on the top of the motor it has a big intake that says DOHC 16v on the top. Also the speedometer is registered to 140 mph. It should be a DOHC since it is a 91 model, Because after 87 in that body style the GTI's are 16v. It should also have badges that say Golf Gti 16v on the hatch and the bottom of the doors. Also how much for the car?

The 16v kind became presented around 1986. formerly that, all GTis have been 8v. you could inform at present once you elevate the bonnet - the 16v engine has a flat-ish alloy precise, with a blue VW badge and 16v lettering - the 8v engine has a lots narrower precise, and no blue lettering.

i think the 16v is a 2.0 L motor, and has huge bold DOHC 16V on the intake manifold. The 8v is a 1.8L, 105 hp motor, which is in your car.

Unfortunate, because the 16v ones are worth a bit more.

Try using the VIN on the VW web site that should tell you as they came both ways on this model. So I would contact them.
