Of course it's a good thing, and very noble to choose to serve. It's also noble to serve when you're drafted -- but volunteers are even more special.

Who is "everyone"? Are they going to pay for your college? Are they going to put a roof over your head? Are they going to make you a man?

They'll be happy to keep you at home, among them, but they might not be so quick to help you get a leg up, with their own hard cash. Why waste time in a dead-end situation?

Anyone considering joining the military right now should remember two things:

1) Joining does not necessarily mean going to Iraq, and going to Iraq does not mean dying or being wounded. These things can happen but they are a rarity when you actually run the numbers on how many people have served tours and come home just fine.
Don't buy the hype.

2) Deployments end, but Army benefits don't. If you look at your future, in the long-term, and you think that by joining the Army, you'll come out ahead on college money, job training, or just being a better person, you're probably right. Nearly everyone can gain something from military service, and you will too.

Good luck!

I'm sure that there are way more people telling you that joining is a bad idea, then supporting you. The Army is hard, and going to Iraq isn't a walk through a sandbox. As long as YOU are comfortable with your decision, then go with it. Don't lean on anyone else's opinion to carry you through. If you do join the Army, good for you! I support you 100%!

Yes and no. You will learn a lot about human nature. In combat you will see men at their best and worst. You will pay deeply for the knowledge you acquire. At 18, I was a crewchief on a helicopter ambulance. At 55, it still hurts. I still wake up in a cold sweat some nights. Both my sons are serving right now and I love them dearly. They have no idea how much pain and anxiety I feel because of this. I will not let them know how much I fear for them. I am very proud of them and pray they will come home hale and hearty. I am very conflicted over this. If G W thinks it is so important, why doesn't he encourage the twins to join and serve in Iraq or Afghanistan. Ever listen to Creedence Clearwater, Fortunate Son? Those who start wars are always willing to send YOU to fight in them.

The army is the best choice anyone could make ever, i'm speaking from experience, there's a reason it's called army strong, people worry it's human nature, but the army is never a bad decision, you can even go to a recruiter and get a video for them on how to accept your choice, but if someone wants to stop you tell them but out and let you be you and become more then you could ever imagine you could be, be strong, be army strong, lol, be all you can be, an army of one, yea i know their all army slogansbut they all ring true

some random "undesirable issues"... privateness. you just about quite won't have your individual room. The style of "roommates" you have relies upon on your accountability station (i became fortunate, we had 2-4 guy rooms). you're able to or would possibly no longer have any say in who your roommates are. Freedom. you won't be able to easily p.c.. up and play hooky for the day in case you do no longer experience like going to artwork. you're assigned to an obligation station you do in comparison to, yet you won't be able to easily flow or quit whenever you experience like it. you're able to could have particular permission just to have a vehicle. unsightly accountability. permit's settle for it... no person likes cleansing the latrines, pulling look after accountability, or comparable jobs. even nonetheless, till you're a minimum of an NCO, you're gonna could do your share. Oh-darkish-thirty. the army used to have a recruiting slogan of "we do extra earlier 9 a.m. than maximum human beings do all day." I on no account understood why this became seen a impressive subject. :) The nutrition. everybody gripes approximately it, even nonetheless that is no longer continually that undesirable... danger. With the present struggling with, the army is a extra risky job now than it became returned while i became in, even in non-wrestle jobs. self-discipline. some human beings handle it extra ideal than others. in case you won't be able to handle a collection of command and being instructed what to do, think of heavily earlier enlisting. The pay. that is no longer lots, yet a minimum of you at the instant are not paying for housing or nutrition (if single and no dependents, a minimum of). it rather is a few. i'm advantageous there are a lot of human beings who might provide you the solid facet of issues. you will could determine for your self whether the advantageous outweighs the damaging.

I was raised in a U.S. military family and I served in the Army. Being a soldier requires some serious growing up. You don't get to be a kid ever again. Go to a local VFW or VA hospital and just start visiting with the men and women there who have served. Listen to them about THIS so-called war. Follow their advice. They won't lead you wrong. OK?

If you want to join the service to fight in an illegal war that had nothing to do with terrorist or 9/11, go for it! Iraq had neither!

After Bush has cut the VA Hospitals for the 2nd time, and he has a tax cut for the rich in his budget, better hope you get killed and not wounded! They will probably want you to bring your own body bag!

It's your life. Do what you think is right for you.

I made a good living driving a big truck over the road. At the time everyone that I would listen to said I was wrong for doing it.

Well, after 30 years and almost 4,000,000 miles, I am very satisfied with my decision

Tell them to mind their own business. If that is what you want to do, go ahead. There are many benefits to being in the military. The stronger they resist, the stronger you should say you want to go. It's your life. I was in the Army Reserve.
