Is Islam a peaceful religion?

The religion started out with an expansionist policy. Muhammad and his descendents and other Caliphs spread Islam right after the religion's inception. Today, Most Middle East Muslim nations condemn people of other faiths.
The Quran says stuff like "Fight and slay the pagans wherever ye find them and seize them, confine them, and lie in wait for them in every place of ambush" (Surah 9:5) and lots of other violent/intolerant stuff.
Muslims go on "Jihads" to fight non-Muslims, although I think Jihad really refers to an inner, personal struggle to become Muslim.
Muslims are fighting in the name of Islam not for greed, but for their religion.
Christians have fought for the New World and spread Christianity, but the it was only spread mostly out of greed for wealth and gold, not religion.
Islam has more militants than any other religion. There are 1.4 billion Muslims. If just one percent were militants, that would mean there are 14 million of them!

Islam is definitely NOT a violent religion..
Allah says in Quran that anyone who kills a human being (regardless of religion) is in fact killing whole of humanity. And He also orders the Muslims to respect people of other religion and not to hurt them.

which means that Islam is never against any religion. it tells us to respect religion and to respect other people. the only problem is that these extremists are just damaging the image of Islam. they are in fact not even following the real meaning of 'Jihad'. the word means 'struggle' and Allah & our beloved Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) has said that the biggest 'Jihad' is the one against one's own negative wishes and not against people of other religion.

My request.. Please dont be confused by what these extremists are doing. read the translation of Quran and u wil find out the real concept and ideology yourself. ur most welcome to understand Islam.

This is how Islam has spread in the past. If they have an advantage , they loot and plunder while screaming verses from the Quran justifying their actions. As soon as the chips are down and they start getting whacked, the peace full Muslims who are silent till then, come out of the wood works claiming ,the non Muslims have twisted the real Islam and only a very microscopic baddies are giving Islam a bad name. They remain silent when they are wining in order to benefit from the loot. They have played this double game thought out history and only of late their strategy has been exposed in the west due to much better and faster communications.

SURE it's peaceful. Just look at the love fests going on in Iraq and Iran. And Syria. And Palestine. And Libya. And.......

But I'm sure the problems today aren't typical. After all, back during the American Revolution, the Barbary Pirates were very reasonable... Oh. Maybe not. But during WWII they were.... oh. on the Nazi side.

Sure ISLAM is a peaceful religion..
Just imagine how peaceful they'd have been living without all the American soldiers killing, shooting and bombing them..
I know, some of the soldiers didn't mean to do so, but it's the command they must follow..
For example, muslims in Malaysia, Brunei, etc, they live peacefully..
But for Palestinian muslims, they are tortured, killed, etc..How can ISLAM look peaceful in countries like this when all sorts of bad people try to kill them and conquer their land??

You know that most of the stories by the media is exaggerated, but still, some people want to believe that all the muslims in palestine, Iraq, Afghanistan, etc deserve torture from the soldiers..just how biased they are..

Bukhari, V1B4N234: "A group of people from the Oreyneh and Oqayelh tribes came to the prophet to embrace Islam, the prophet advised them to drink the urine of the camels. Later on when they killed the prophet's shepherd, the prophet seized them, gouged out their eyes, cut their hands and legs, and left them thirsty in the desert to die."

Surah 9:5 is God's warning to the early Muslims to kill or be killed by the Meccans who are out to kill them. It was meant for COMBAT, it was not a command to walk around and kill innocent bystanders. This is a big misconception among Islam haters. Murder is wrong in Islam, so wrong that killing one person is as bad as killing everyone on Earth, and saving the life of someone is as good as saving the lives of everyone on Earth.

No religion of the world preaches violent.

and islam is the religion of peace.
Islam preaches the message of Allah. which is

"If you kill one person unjustly it is as if you killed the whole humanity, and if you saved once person it is as if you saved the whole humanity." (Quran Surah 5 Verse No 32)

so how islam can not be peaceful,
