potty train- To potty train a dog bring him/her to her designated pee area IMMEDIATELY after getting him/her. Wait outside until he/she pees or after 5 minutes or so just go back inside. Whenever after eating meals bring her out to pee and poop. If she pees in her crate, do not give her any attention. Leave her in there for a couple of hours and when you clean up don't let her see you cleaning. She will try to get attention this way. As well if she pees on the floor do the same and ignore her.
The trip home- On the trip home, bring a crate and put him/her in the crate cover the crate so he/she cannot she the car. This will prevent him/her from vomiting out of fright in the future whenever she goes in a car or moving vehicle.
Items- Buy high quality food and most importantly buy a crate, water bowl, cushion, cleaning stuff(natures miracle works great), leash! and anything else i missed.
Dont cuddle him/her on the first day because she/he may be scared. Wait a couple days or until she/he is familiar with surroundings and people.

Rewards. Get to know that word. It will be your savior :) Reward it consistently for doing what you want it to do. If it goes potty outside instead of in your living room, reward it from the start. Reward it for good behaviors such as sitting, waiting for it's food, sitting to meet guests, etc. Rewarding for doing good is a much more effective way to train a dog than simply scolding it for doing wrong, plus it won't cause your dog to become deathly afraid of you.
I think the best thing for you as a new pet owner is going to be to enroll in a rewards-based training class, which you can find at your local PetSmart or Petco, among other places. This is going to let your dog know from the start what is expected, and it will help you learn to trust each other as you get used to each other. Also, if your rottie comes with issues, as many shelter dogs do, a trainer can help you with the specific issues that arise so you can get those under control from the start. Trust me when I tell you it is a wise investment in your dog, your sanity, and the many happy years you'll have together.
Good luck.

Good for you for adopting a rottie!! they always have hard times getting good homes.
As for the potty training.. well.. what I did w/ my adopted dog, I just took him outside constantly and praised him like crazy when he went.. that seemed to do the trick right away. The goal is to prevent accidents from ever happening.

I took my puppy out right after they ate and drank. Then like ever hour or two between feedings. If she potties in the house don't hit it just pick it up and take it outside and say go potty. Sooner or later they will get the hint and tell you when they need to go out.

Hi rym22604!!
Just like babies, puppies have no control of when or where they "unleash their goods". Having a puppy urinate inside your house is definitely not going to make you happy and it won't do any good for your puppy when you get mad with him/her.
