Let me start by saying that the human body was designed to cure itself - and what it does when a bug or virus invades is increase it's temperature until it is not a hospitable host for the illness and the illness dies. If you do not allow your fever to happen, it takes longer the for bug to die. Antibiotics are often not that affective in getting rid of the common cold or flu and they leave your body out of practice to fit the illness itself - just let the cold happen.
Often times a cold is your body's way of saying "I need a rest and I need one now" - you need to honor that. And incidentally, a sore throat can indicate a tendency toward holding back angry words. Think about what was going on in your life when the sore throat started and see if you can find a time when you held back (and continue to hold back) angry words. Often times, releasing the negative emotions cures us faster than anything else.
Peace!

Managed to cure my sore throat in a very short time by buying a medium sized jar of pickled onions in sweet vinegar, chewing slowly and drinking small amounts of the vinegar with each swallow. May slightly aggravate stomach ulcer sufferers but also helps ease those with symptoms of gaseous Irritable Bowel Syndrome. This remedy is not as damaging to the throat lining as gargling salt in my opinion - and decidedly a more pleasant experience. Seriously cured my sore throat within 2 days. Recommended.

was the amoxicillin prescribed to you by your dr specifically for this sore throat? if not-then you probably shouldn't be taking it. most sore throats are viral and antibiotics have no effect on viruses (this is why drs won't prescribe them for colds). if your sore throat IS due to a bacterial infection-you might not be using the right antibiotic to treat it (you might need something stronger)
taking antibiotics when they are not needed CAN cause your body to be resistant to them, resulting in them not working the next time you really do need them.
viral infections usually take 10-14 days to clear out but can take longer depending on how strong the virus.
try using these things to ease the symptoms
-suck on hard candies or ice
-gargle with warm salt water (2tsp salt to 8oz water)
-drink warm tea w/honey
-use a warm mist humidifier in your room at nite while you sleep. this will keep the air moist and prevent your throat from becoming dry and irritated while sleeping.
eat if you feel up to it but don't stress if you have no appetite. drinking is most important so you don't get dehydrated which can worsen your condition rapidly. avoid fluids with high sugar content b/c these will dehydrate you more. stick with water, gatorade, or sprite (or similar) in moderation.
if you develop any of the following symptoms call your dr within 24 hours
-fever of 100.5 or higher
-severe sore throat (swallowing or even breathing is difficult and very painful)
-you can see white patches on the back of your throat
these are symptoms of strep throat and you will need stong antibiotics to treat it.
hope you feel better

I just had the exact same symptoms just a couple of weeks ago...I had a terrible sore throat and couldn't even get yogurt down for 6 or 7 days....I tried Zithromax, but that didn't help at all, so my Doc gave me Augmentin antibiotic for 10 days and that finally helped.
For the pain, I took Ibuprofin, which also kept the fever down, and my doctor said that was the best course of action.
It was a long recovery, but I finally felt better, I hope you do too!

Sore throat is usually due to a viral infection. Gargling with warm salty water or mouthwash can reduce the pain and inconvenience. You can find some good home remedies at http://ailments.in/sorethroat.html

Please consider gargling with tepid water and a little bit of table salt. Or, a teaspoon of honey with a few drops of lemon to help coat your throat may help too. If you don't feel better soon, please go back to your dr. on this. Take care.
