I have promised my mom, Jesus, myself, and even my cat that I would not harm myself anymore, but the thought always seems to be there. Getting rid of my knives and daggers never seems to help, because there is always scissors, kitchen knives, and even tweezers around to cut with. What are some good ways to deal with self harm, and what to do to stop it??

Guilt is a big part of the process of self-injury. It sounds like you feel a lot of guilt over even wanting to do it. Guilt doesn't get people anywhere, you'll just end up repeating the same old cycle over and over again.

So tell yourself it's okay to feel this way, and then try to go about a way of changing for the better.

For me to stop it took getting rid of the feelings of depression and worthlessness. I had to find things I could do other than cutting when the temptation came. I also had to get rid of things that might put me "in that mood" - I stopped listening to music that was depressive and got off of internet sites where I was surrounded by mostly depressed people.

I don't know why you do it, only you know that - but finding better ways to do what you are attempting to do by cutting is the only answer I know.

You should look into therapy. You want to hurt yourself externally, because something is hurting on the inside. To really stop this pattern of self abuse you need to work it out with a licensed professional, who can help you coap with these issues and work through them. The fact that you want to stop is a good start. Now you need some supports to help you quit.

So you hate yourself. Did you do something that you feel the obligation to punish yourself for? If so, there are two ways to fix it: one way is to accept that's who you are and there is nothing you can do about it. The better way, if you can, is to change your habit that makes you feel so guilty about. Now maybe you can stop hating yourself so much. If it's your look, change it, exercise, get a nice haircut...If it's your job, get a new one, take a new one even it pays less. It takes time to change your life, so take it one step at a time.

Therapy/counseling is definitely the number 1 answer.

Self-help books can explain some things to you, and help your work with your counselor.

Pray, learn to meditate, and keep yourself very busy--don't give yourself free time to think about harming yourself.

They have some medications on the market that can help with self-harm. Naltrexone has been prescribed.
