Only if it looks like you're next on his bite list.

Depends on whether the possum bit him/her back.......... which I assume it did.
While it is POSSIBLE for a possum to carry rabies, it's not likely as the animal that is carrying the rabies has to be large enough to bite the possum and have the possum live to carry the virus...........unlikely that a German Shepherd has the virus and bit the possum that bit your dog (I feel like I'm reciting "I know an old lady who swallowed a fly"), if your dog is up on it's rabies shots, I wouldn't worry about this encounter unless you see some really odd behavior or infection from a scratch or bite in the next week or so.

Have the vet check him, to be on the safe side.
But MAN! that's the best chihuahua in the world. Make him a medal that says POSSUM MASTER. Dang what a terrific little guy. Possums are tough, y'know. What a protector!

If your dog is up to date on his vaccinations,he should be ok but a call to your vet to discuss the matter would probably be a good idea.... If only to brag anyway, lol!

But it's unlikely that a full blooded chihuahua could draw blood through an o'possums thick fur. And the o'possum didn't have the chance to bite back? Whoa!

I must give your dog my admiration for even challenging an o'possom, they can be extremely aggressive (where I live anyway) and I've seen much larger dogs run from them once they open those huge mouths and flash all those sharp little teeth. Ok,I admit it,my late Boxer was terrified of them. Oh the embarressment.....

All Hail the Mighty Mite Dog! ;)

Just be glad, the possum did not bite your chihuahua. I doubt your dog broke the possum's skin, probably just a nip. Call the vet, watch the dog, and give him a treat for being a good watch dog.

Not unless the possum is mad and decides to come back, a chihuahua doesn't have a chance against a mad one.

Probably not, but I suspect the possum may have something to worry about! :-)

p.s. your dog won't get rabies (as suggested by others) unless the other animal breaks his skin and the virus is injected into his bloodstream. But you say that your dog bit the possum and not the other way around, so probably no worries.

Maybe the last time he got out you accidentally brought a possum home and he is out right now facing the possibility of becoming the next meal at the roadkill grill. Does your current "chihuaha" hiss and claw at you when you try to pet it?

Yes, possums may contain rabies. If saliva is spreaded, the rabies could be transmitted onto you or onto other dogs or cats. Go to the vet ASAP to get a rabies shot.
