Well Lent isn't just for "giving" up. It can be just as useful to add something. And that is just what my family and I chose to do this year. We chose to say the entire St. Brigid prayers, in reflection of Christ's Passion. This is to be done for one year. So far we've done two weeks, and it is difficult--due to time and the language of the prayer-- but we're all committed.
Last few years we 'gave' up something and seemed rather pithy, like 'soda' 'pizza', things that aren't terribly hard to give up hence the 'change up' this year.

Lent is a 40 day religious fast that ends with Easter. Religious fasting means no animal products, oil, or wine. Orthodox, the first christian church, still fasts this ways. Other churches, in order to do as they desire, just choose to give up 1 thing.
