I think what you're referring to is not a pope at all, but rather when Jesus was healing a man who could not walk and believed that this was caused by his sin. He told the man "your sins are forgiven you." The Jewish pharisees present told him that no one could forgive sins other than God, to which Jesus responded: "Which is easier, to say your sins are forgiven or rise up and walk?"
