They have to want to stop. Doesn't matter what you want. Forcing the issue will remove you from their life. Accept it...or move on.

You flush those things down the toilet, you will lose your hearing after your friend is done yelling at you. Let your friend smoke. What business of it is yours to interfere with how s/he lives. What you are doing is destructive to your friendship to this person because addictions are a hard thing to break. Only the person can quit, not you trying to do something childish as hiding their nicotine. This is REALITY, sweetie, not some sheltered anime or sitcom. You need to get out more.

If you make a power and control struggle out of this then your chances of the person quitting are not good. No one can force a person to stop smoking.

Making them feel like control of their life is at stake over the issue makes them not want to stop, just to prove THEY are in control, not you.

Conversely, some people that get a lot of attention for their habit continue it to get you to give them that attention - even if its negative attention.

If this person cares about you then your feelings will matter to them. Writing them a note every so often to express how much you care about them and don't want to lose them due to their smoking habit can be a non-threatning way to communicate your feelings. Focus on the feelings of love and caring you have and how you don't want to see them hurt. Don't preach. Just love.

And let them know when the time comes to quit you are there to support them through a very difficult process.

You can't make someone quit. You are just going to drive them further into their habit if you keep screwing with them. People have to come to the decision on their own, and quit when they want to. I would tell them one last time that you hate that they smoke, and then lay off.
