Yes, there are cats that suck on blankets and other fabric items. I can't believe your vet never heard of this. It is like a child sucking on a pacifier or their thumb. The cat is sucking on fabric, like nursing when he was young. Stretching out his "arms" is also like pushing on his mother with his paws to help express more milk - so this sucking and stretching activity is just a comforting experience to him. The only problem is that he could potentially ingest some fabric. If you are worried about that, you will have to train him not to suck. I am including a link that talks about how to do that. Good luck. Most cats keep doing that stretching or "kneading" motion with their front legs though - it just shows they are comfortable or getting comfortable.

I have a boy cat around the same age. He started doing that to a soft, nubby blanket that I got for Christmas. He sucks on it while kneading, like it's a mama cat. He only does this with that particular blanket. It really doesn't hurt him any, so I never worried about it.

Your kitty may have been weaned too early. I have two boys that were bottle fed since birth and they still kneaded and sucked for 2 years. Your cat may or may not stop. It is a normal thing for kittens weaned early or bottle fed.

My cats all do this too. (I have 2 now and my old cat did this as well.) I asked the vet about it and he said it usually has to do with being taken from mother too soon. It's kind of an instinctual thing to do to calm themselves and show their love for you. He called to wool sucking and said as long as they aren't actually trying to eat the things it's fine. Gross but fine!

My 4 year old cat has been doing this since he was a kitten. It's kneading, what they do when nursing, some just don't ever stop.
My cat gets so into it that he even gets a red rocket!

It may be kneading. Most cats do it. It is similar to when they are suckling. It is nothing to worry about. My cat actually used to do it to the poor dog.
