In garrison, normally, you work five days a week and get at least one four day weekend a month. Most days, you work a whopping seven hours, maybe less, depending on where you are in your training cycle. The other side of the coin is that there WILL be times when you will put in 80 hour weeks, or be gone to a FTX for weeks on end, but mostly back in CONUS, you will work less than any of your civilian counterparts.
My third year in the Army, I made over $40,000 (this is not usual, I came in as an E-3, and was promoted to E-5 in minimum time). That figure includes BAH and BAS. BAH is the $1100/month the Army paid me for my housing costs in Colorado Springs. Oh, and don't forget the essentially FREE health care for you and your family. Then there's also the free college education and VA loans for housing.
The Army will demand much from you - discipline, respect, attention to detail, perserverance under adverse circumstances, responsibility, and leadership. These are life lessons that will serve you well in the civilian world and make you successful in the military.
BUT your success depends upon your willingness to follow orders (especially when you do not agree with them), respect your superiors (especially when you do not like them), and keep your big fat mouth shut (um, I'm still working on this one myself). If you cannot do these things while being adaptive to constant changes in planning and willing to work HARD at times, then you will not be very successful. Nor will you ever be very successful in the civilian world. The difference between the two is that the Army will try very hard to force you to succeed whether you want to or not.
I will not bullshit you, sometimes this comes at a heavy price. In the last three years and seven weeks since I have been in the Army, I have spent about nine months of it actually with my family when you count FTX's, PLDC, NTC, etc. I have pulled my mangled and bloody friends out of HMMWV's. I have picked up by hand the small pieces of what was left of my buddies that were killed in a rocket attack on orders from my command.
I am not a particulary patriotic person. I do not keep up with politics. But I DO know the full measure of my character thanks to the Army. I know how I would react in a life threatening situation. I know 100% what my decision would be if I had to sacrifice myself for the safety of others. I know the burdens of leadership when life and death are on the line. I know the true meaning of words such as loyalty, selfless service, and duty. I know how to appreciate all of the small things in life that most people take for granted every day because I know how fragile life truly is. I know the limits of my body, mind, and spirit and they are much more than I ever believed possible.
But at the end of the day, regardless of what I think of our foreign policy, nothing gives me more pride than to realize that I am an American Soldier sworn to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies both foreign and domestic - something that less than one percent of the population can ever claim to have done.
Also, at least for me, I like the fact that I am paid to kill people on a semi-regular basis.

this is something you have to answer yourself. Make up a list of questions and go talk to an Army Recruiter. They will give you a presentation called "the Army interview."
If you don't like what they have to say, don't join.

Good question.
Do you have a death wish?
From what I gather, morale in the Mid East is very very low.
Go to university and do something wonderful for the world instead, it that is an option.
