A nice pen that doesn't smear when you write afterward. I prefer a gel tip.

If your handwriting is really good, try using a calligraphy pen for a special touch!

Pen has been the right way for so long, that it would almost be "artsy" to use pencil. Nobody signs with a pencil anymore, so you have a good chance of starting a fad.

Pen looks neater and doesn't smudge like a pencil. I always sign my cards with a pen.

Silly Danny.

Everybody knows that the only right thing to use is a crowquill pen, dipped in:

...Black or blue ink, for standard, general purpose cards.

...Red ink, for messages to one's creditors.

...Chocolate syrup, for love letters and valentines.

...Lemon juice, for secret messages (hold the card high over a flame to brown the lemon juice and make it visible).

...Crankcase oil (used) for obligatory cards to one's in-laws.

...Blood, for oaths of vengeance.

...Chateau Neuf-du-Pape Cabernet Sauvingon for party invitations.

And, of course:

...Strained peas or semi-soft poo-poo for baby announcements.
