That could be very true. Even in the field during war time, the paperwork still has to be done. I deployed to Iraq shortly before I retired from the Air Force. I was a senior NCO at the time, so I mostly sat at my desk and ran the Plumbing Shop. I only went on convoy when I wanted to. There were also admin people there in the Army that never left the base; they just stayed at the camp and did paperwork and other admin duties.

If he is a pencil pusher odds are he will just sit in an office and shuffle papers around. When I was deployed I was in an air-conditioned office and the only time I Ieft the base was to sight see. Being in the middle of the desert, there isn't much to see unless you love sand. I wouldn't worry. He will be fine.

The military is a bureacracy like any other, if he has someone higher up looking out for him, or is a specialist badly needed in that post, could be so. On the otherhand I knew a cook well praised by a C.O. that ended up driving a truck in Iraq, which he had no training or experince doing, because they needed a warm body in that seat. People are beginning to act like Eisenhower was Jesus Christ or something, he kept his illegitimate son safe behind a desk during D-Day, yet had a soldier shot for desertion and was not well liked by a lot of troops under his command for that reason. (But at least he didn't slap anybody).

Depending on his job it might be true. If he does something like finance he probably won't be leaving the base often

Your friend is a good man and a true American patriot. He obviously cares about you a great deal and you are lucky to have such a friend.

Somebody does have to do paper work.

LIke everyone else said - it depends on what exactly his MOS is.

It is possible but your friend should never count on things remaining the same day to day in the military. Orders changing his assignment at anytime.
