Hi, I am currently taking 1mg of Ativan daily for anxiety panic disorder. Is taking 1 mg of Ativan the same as taking 1 mg of Xanax?

True, both Ativan and Xanax are benzodiazepines. However, they work a little differently. Ativan is made so that it takes longer to start working but it's properties of sedation last much longer than Xanax. It is "stronger" than Xanax in that respect. If you are being treated for anxiety panic disorder, it is helpful because it is long-acting. Especially for those with these types of disorders that interfere with falling asleep and staying asleep without interruptions and trying to fall back asleep.
Xanax 1mg might seem stronger to most people because it begins acting much more quickly in your system, thus you feel the effects fast. However, it works for about 4-5 hours only, so if someone requires relief for longer periods of time during the day and/or night, you would need to take more Xanax to continue its effect.
I benefit from Ativan due to bipolar disorder and bad insomnia. I have also taken Xanax in the same milligram dose and had to take more of it to maintain it in my system. For me, Ativan works well and I don't need to take more than I do when I use Xanax.
Hope this helped.

I have been on both medications. Four times a day in and of itself is a good way to keep you, well, relaxed. Honestly, if it were Xanax or Ativan, you would be just fine as it is pretty hard to overdose since you are taking the med through out the course of the day. Xanax is Alprazolam and Ativan is Lorazepam. They both contain the same chemical base, but do have a slight difference in effect. I notice that Ativan makes my appetite peak a little more and I feel a little more aloufe on it. I was on 3mg Xanax and sometime had to take that 2 times a day for panic attacks. You should be fine.. Again - I am not a MD, so my advice is only suggestions.. I would consult a doctor before upping any dosages on your own.

I prefer Xanax. It is more potent then Ativan to me. But we are not all the same and some meds are good for me but not for you.

That is not working. At first it makes you calm and relaxed. If you take enough you will sleep real well. If you take too much you won't remember much of what happens to you, you can do things and not remember at all. Then after a very short period of time it doesn't work as well, so you take more. And more. And the next thing you know you can't stop taking it. If you are anxiety suffer, than this will be of great value for you. Not even close. Xanax is the strongest benzo for anxiety, so it's a lot stronger than Ativan. I think 1 mg of Xanax would be about the equivalent of 5-10 mg Ativan. I may be a bit off, but there are benzo dose conversion charts online you can look up to make sure.
If you're considering switching from one to the other, you might want to start off with .25 or .5 mg Xanax, which would be closer.

hullo
both of them are of the benzodiazepine group, ativan(lorazepam) and xanax(alprazolam).
the two of them are of the short acting type and potent, xanax is superior to ativan in panic disorder, and the dosage are the same.
