I have just finished installing my windows update for the first time, and now when i take a look at my add or remove programs file there has been at least twenty files with the name "Security Update for Windows Xp" ending with a different number in parenthesis.

The same situation has happened with another file named "Windows Xp Hotfix" also ending with different numbers in parentheses.

now my question is:
For all you that have frequently downloaded and installed the Windows updates is it normal to have several of the updates installed with the same name (except with alternating numbers) or is this a mistake on my system? Is it possible that my system installed the same updates more than twenty times?

This is completely normal. The number in parenthesis (it's usually KB1234...) is the number of the MS Knowledge Base article that corresponds to the patch or update. You can go to microsoft and do a search ion each number to read details on what the update or patch addressed or did. Each one is a unique patch or file, so don't remove any of them. There should be several of them and this is all working normally.

I won't call myself a computer expert quite yet, but I am pretty intelligent with computers -- and Windows Update. I wondered the same thing for awhile, until I started learning about computers. I can tell you that each one of those updates are a good thing, and without even one of them -- your computer will go haywire. They're there for your computer's security, to keep it running correctly. Oh, and don't worry, each update is different even though they may seem the same.

They would have to be different updates because a new one with the same name/number would overwrite an existing one. These updates are necessary and do not take up a lot of disk space. I would definitely not delete them.

its not normal. i suggest u erase those, and send exactly the same question to microsoft.com customer service. they respond quickly. but its not normal, theres no reason there are updates of such matter. Maybe there are toolbars.
