Her dog is a golden retriever and is about 12 years old. He is currently on the floor, and he cant get up, and hes having pain in his hip. Should i be with my best friend in possibly his last hours? or should I let her be alone with her family and dog?

The dog should get to a vet. It may be dying or it may just be in horrible, horrible pain. If your friend's family cannot afford to treat the dog, they should consider euthanasia so he does not suffer so much. If they don't want to euthanize, at least get them to consider taking the dog to a vet for pain medication.

Call her and let her know that if she needs you you will be right there. I wouldn't want to watch a dog suffer. I think it would be better to leave the family alone so they can grieve how they wish. They might decide to take it to the vet and have it put down and ask if you their daughter can stay with you.

I just don't understand how the family can let the dog suffer, can you? If its dying, then have it put down...why give the dog and themselves added agony. Its hard enough to lose a pet.

I would want to be alone with my best friend in her final hours. I can't imagine how horrible it's going to be when I lose her but I am not going to want anyone to see me that vulnerable. I probably won't even go to work for a few days. If I have other dogs I know they will be able to help but nothing will ever be the same without Mia.

The best thing is to ask her what she wants you to do. My best friend's cat was dying and I was there with her when the vet came to euthanize her cat and was there to help her bury her. She would have been alone otherwise. If she has family there, she may want to spend the time with family. But you can be there for her afterward. Grief over a pet is not so different than grief for a person. Send a card and make a donation to a local humane society in her pet's name. The thought will be appreciated.

Wow..Something I dread to think about as an owner of an senior dog. I think you should ask her what she wants. If she wants you to be with her, I think you should be. If she would prefer to be alone with family she will let you know. Just letting her know you care and are there for her to lean on is a great thing. She is lucky t have a friend like you

What you and your friend should do is take poor dog to the vet so he can be put down. The dog is suffering and it is cruel to let poor dog continue to suffer. It is very selfish to keep the dog alive while he is in pain. Come on, do the right thing.

Answerz says let her be alone with the dog....forget that. Be there with her unless of course she asks to leave her be. But in reality the dog needs to be seen asap. Poor thing.

Just be there in thought; let her be alone with the dog and let her come for the emotion hug, then you can "be there" be there, lol

ask her....
i have a golden that is 9, and he's showing his age. people bond with their pets in a different way than their lovers/friends. pets live only for you, they have no responsibilities or worries, and their world focuses completely on you.
just be sensitive(the fact you are asking this question shows you are) and be supportive.

Best friends are always there to support each other in happiness or sadness. I say be there. even if you have to sit behind her to be there at the critical moment would be greatly appreciated. I know I would be there for my best friend and my best friend was there for me and my kids when our beloved pet died.
