I don't know of any other solutions, but if this hernia is repaired while your son is young it will be better than if it has to be done when he is older. My husband's mother chose not to have his hernia repaired when he was a child and he suffered as an adult. It has taken two different surgeries to try to relieve the issues caused by this problem.

As Far as I know there are no other solutions for a hernia and left uncorrected can cause more problems
my son is 5 months and 4 days old and he was born 10 weeks 4 days premature he was released from the hospital when he was 7 weeks old and 2 weeks later me and my wife found a large buldge on left side of abdomen went to Er and was advised that it was a hernia he had an operation 4 days later during the time prior to his surgery was very difficult due to the fact that we could not allow him to cry or even strain as it could push the hernia out and cause more problems the surgery was less than 30 min with a 1 day stay in the hospital and if he had been older and bigger in size he would not have had to stay.
so I would advise to go through with the surgery he is YOUR CHILD his well being is your job
yes it is a very scary thing to think about your child on the operating table but it is better than the baby hurting all the time
look for a pediatric surgeon for a second opinion but hernias are very common and if there is one on the right there very well could be one on the left
best of luck with what ever you choose

Firstly take a second opinion of a pediatric surgeon.
secondly , see if it can be delayed by an year or so.
some of the smaller hernias are known to be corrected
as the child grows. However if the hernia is Big , in that case, go ahead and get operated right away

I do not know of any other solution to a hernia. My son had one from birth and he had the surgery when he was 15mths. It is a very simple procedure. The worst part of it was seeing him after the procedure before the drugs wore off. He slept most of the day afterwords but was fine the next day.

My son had a hernia at 1 year old as well and it's a safe procedure. I was very scared but in my opinion it had to be done. I don't think there is another option. I'll pray for you.
