I know exactly what the Marines do.
they were originally organized as the Continental Marines on November 10th, 1775 as naval infantry, and The United States Marine Corps serves as an amphibious force-in-readiness. The Marine Corps does not employ any unique combat arms, and the Marine Corps combat capabilities overlap those of the U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force, and in the aftermath of World War II, the restructuring the American defense establishment included the dissolution of the Marine Corps and the folding of its capabilities into the other services. Leading this movement were such prominent Army officers as General Dwight Eisenhower and Army Chief of Staff George C. Marshall. All we need is the Army, Air Force, and Navy.

I totally agree, let's get rid of the jar-heads. Cutting the Marines would free up a lot of money for the Dept. of the Navy to utilize in other areas. Besides we don't any Armed force to answer solely to the President, it's just a bad Idea.

Your question has some validity as this nations largest amphibious assault was performed by the Army (D-Day). That said, the USMC is a rapidly deployable force that is stationed on ships and at embassies all over the world. That is what makes them unique. True, the US Army's combat effectiveness is equal to the USMC (historically speaking) but, the Army focuses on taking and holding land in large force whereas the USMC is an initial invasion force usually on a smaller scale. So, no, the USMC plays a vital combat role in conjunction with the Army.

You need to check your facts. The Marine Corps is responsible for guarding ALL US Embassies around the world. We are the only Branch that does that. The Corps has perfected amphibious warfare. The Corps also provides security aboard naval vessels that carry nukes. So if you want your embassies and nukes unguarded, go ahead. Here's a tip, it will never happen. The Marines have too many friends in high places, too many supporters, and dang it, we just look GOOD in those Blues. Semper Fi!!!!!!!!!

The Marine Corps are the only branch that answers only to the Commander In Chief. The rest answer to Congress. The Marines can be deployed within 24 hours anywhere in the world, so if you wanted to give up first strike capability, then I suppose so.

Although there are a lot of similarities between what the Marines and other branches do, there are also some very major differences.
All branches have some overlap in their capabilities - it is essential.
Besides, we can't get rid of them... after the Navy's dress blues, the Marines have the best looking dress uniform! :)
