If the company has a web site, you may be able to go there and check for one, but this is a relatively new thing for a lot of companies and a lot of them just don't have a setup for that.
You probably already have contacted the company and asked for another one to be sent out. Did you move? Usually that's the problem because the company may still have had the old address on their files and sent the W-2 to that address.
You can actually file without it, but when you get that one you'll have to file an amended return. It's no big deal to do, and it's perfectly legit to file the amended one later. If it gets too close to the deadline to file, I suggest you just dive in and file without it, knowing that you'll probably get a letter from the IRS saying that your records don't match theirs and then you can do the amended one. If he had withholding taken out of the wages on that W-2, it shouldn't have a huge effect on the amount of the refund or payment.
Also, you can file a request for an automatic extention of time to file the return, by April 17th. That may be the best way to go. That way, you should have given them enough time to get a replacement W-2 to you.

I doubt very much he would be able to view his temp agency's W2 online. Here is a link to the W2 Express website and you could punch the name of the company in the box and see if they have it. It's mostly big companies that use this service though. My husband's Co was listed but I could not view his online and was told by Human Resources that we would of had to have signed up by a certain date in Jan (I think 1/14) in order to view it online. Here's the link just in case though:

Is there any way he can go to the temp agency and just ask them for it? Maybe they mailed it to the wrong address and you can get a duplicate one from them. If they never sent it though you may have to contact the IRS because they can get in trouble for not sending it out by the end of January too.

He needs to contact the employer for the W2s. Some employers make them available on line but he'll have to ask them how to access them. There's no other way to get that information other than from the employer.
If they don't have his correct address the W2 may have been returned as undeliverable. A phone call is all it should take to sort out the problem.

I'm fairly certain you can't view it online. I had the same problem with a temp agency, though in my case it was because I moved and, although I told them several times that my address changed, they never actually changed it in their database. I couldn't even request a duplicate w-2 online-- I had to physically send in a request form.
What you're going to have to do is call up the temp agency and ask about what you need to do to get a duplicate w-2. If you have a fax, maybe you'll be lucky enough to have them fax it to you. If not, it could take 2 weeks or more to get a new one.

W-2's are issued by the employer. Some employers like WalMart, Home Depot, Lowe's, and the Military offer their employees the ability to view and download them on line, but most don't yet.
The law is that all employers must mail W-2's to the employee's last know address by Jan 31 of each year. The IRS allows "Substitute W-2's" to be made by tax prep companies like H&R Block from the employee's last paycheck stub or other employee pay records beginning on Feb 15 of each year which give the post office 2 weeks to deliver the ones mailed on Jan 31st. If your hubby still has all his paycheck stubs or at least the final one, you can have one made up and use it to file. One caution though, to file the return electonically instead of mailing it in, you must have the employer's "EIN" (Employers Identification Number) or the Owner's Social Security number. Without that, you have to mail it and just wait for the IRS to handle it for you.

Not unless your employer has made them available to you online. There is no central database of all W2 forms.
